Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

November 2004

We had another doctor’s appointment on Friday. I gained another 4lbs (over 5wks) and Dr. Lee was again pleased. Although she did set a goal for weight gain over the next month—only 4lbs. She said the only reason she puts it that way is because Thanksgiving is coming up. No big meals. Frequent small meals were suggested. That won’t be a problem. If food is setting out, I usually snack on it little by little all day. If I do overeat, I’m supposed to take a walk to burn off some of the extra calories. The hardest suggestion she gave was about desserts. Only 4 in a one week period! She said if I have 4 pieces of pie in 1 day, none for the next 6 days. I take it she’s never seen the dessert buffet at any of my family get-togethers or tasted my grandmas’ pies. She’d know that’s COMPLETELY impossible!!

We also discussed the results of the 18wk ultrasound. The radiologist directly pointed out to us that I had a low lying placenta and that I was carrying Xander pretty low. She showed us on the monitor how the placenta extended to the edge of my cervix. She said that she would have to make a note of that in her report. For some reason, there was no mention of any of this in the report Dr. Lee had. She said she would take our word for it and that we’d schedule another ultrasound at 28wks to monitor the placenta. Evidently, as the uterus expands, the placenta “moves with it and appears to travel up the uterine wall. So we’re hoping to see that it does that. If not, she mentioned that it might be diagnosed as placenta previa, which could include bed rest until delivery and the possibility of a c-section. So cross your fingers that over the next 6wks, the placenta moves away from my cervix!!!

Xander doesn’t seem to mind any of this. He’s just as active as always. Since he first starting kicking and punching about a month ago, he’s never stopped! He stayed up for the whole Colt’s game last week and cheered the team on with some kicks and punches after every first down and touchdown. He “watched his first basketball game Friday night (Aunt Lisa played Muncie South) and seemed less impressed than he was at the football game (sorry Lisa!). Chad and I are now trying to decide if all the knees and elbows we’ve been feeling lately are from him practicing tackling or swinging his elbows after a rebound—maybe some of both! He is still obsessed with Taco Bell (food from any other Mexican restaurant doesn’t cut it) and Cool Ranch Doritos. Maybe that will help as we cruise through the dessert buffet at Thanksgiving! He has also starting exploring and discovered that his home has a main level and upstairs. When I wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, he’s almost always curled up just beneath my belly button but by the time I get to work, he’s back down in the basement. Hopefully he’ll decide to move in up there soon because he’s growing like a weed, which is allowing him to kick and stick his head in my hips. OUCH!

We went shopping on Saturday with Grandma Alice and Grandpa Dave. We registered at Target for a lot of the things Xander will need (and we want) but still plan on registering at Babies R Us for the rest. They have a bigger selection of strollers, car seats, and that sort of stuff. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to drag Chad out for another day of shopping since Saturday was a whole day experience.

Alice and Dave arrived at 5am. We had breakfast at Denny’s at ~7:30 and were at Target around 8:30. We spent about 2hrs there before heading up to the north side of Indy. We had lunch at Max and Erma’s before they headed back to Jay Co. Then Chad and I spent about 2½ to 3hrs in USA Baby! We quickly decided on getting a double-wide dresser and using the top of it as a changing table (a space saver since the room probably won’t accomodate more than 3 large items). But that was the only thing we agreed on quickly when it came to the furniture! We couldn’t decide on a crib and dresser that we both liked or a manufacturer. We finally got it down to 2 of each but still couldn’t agree. Finally, we abandoned the in-store options and went with what we liked out of a catalog. That decision took about 2 minutes! So the big items have been ordered and are supposed to be here in 6-8weeks. (There are pictures of them in the Xander’s Room photo album.)

Those were by far the hard choices to make that day. In addition to the crib and dresser, we ordered an upholstered rocking chair and bedding. The rocking chair was the first one we sat in. We immediately fell in love! It was so roomy and cushy! We picked a water resistant, micro-fiber fabric in a light shade of green (the color shows up in the bedding). It should also be here in 6-8wks (I couldn't find a picture to post). We had the bedding narrowed down to 2 choices, too: a frog and turtle set mainly in blue and green and zoo animals. After seeing all the other things that coordinated with the zoo animals, it became an easy choice (a picture is also in the Xander’s Room photo album). Plus (Chad likes this part), it matches the color in the room so we probably won’t be doing any painting. To decorate the walls, we’re going to hang the comforter up as a wall hanging, buy some of the wall hangings from the set (shown in the picture), spell out his name or the names of some of the animals with wooden letters, and hang some white shelves to fill with stuffed animals. Since the bedding set has become so popular, it’s on back order right now (we missed the last one in the store by just a few hours) and should be in at the same time as everything else.

It’s such a BIG relief to have everything picked out and ordered! If things do come in late, we aren’t too worried. Generous Aunt Melinda and Uncle Shannon loaned us Brayden’s crib to use so he’ll have that to use for the first few weeks/month(s). We’d also be able to use the dresser that’s already in the room as the changing table and for clothes and supply storage. Just picking things out helps the reality set in. I can't imagine how excited we'll be when everything arrives!!
