Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

December 2004

I guess we scheduled the 3D ultrasound during nap time. Xander slept through the entire session and there was no waking him up!

When we first started, he was laying head down, bottom up with his feet down by his face, and his face turned toward my back. (We weren’t surprised that he’d changed positions since the last ultrasound. He’s been making tidal waves with my belly!) He wouldn’t turn his little head even a little bit to show us his face. The ultrasound tech poked at him with the probe and we tried several positions for me to lie on the table. Nothing worked. He wouldn’t move, except for his arms and legs (he grabbed his ear and played with his toes…sooooo cute!!). After 10min of looking at the back of his head, the tech suggested I walk around and try to find something to eat or drink to pep him up.

When I laid back down to try again, he still hadn’t moved. After more poking with the probe, pushing, shaking, and Daddy talking to him, he finally turned his head so we could see his profile!! That’s when we realized the little guy was sleeping. He never did turn his head to face us completely, but he did a really good job for a sleeping baby!!

We got some really cute profile pictures and more of an idea about his personality. At one point when the tech was trying to get him to turn his face more, he actually shook his head no at her and later stuck out his tongue!! What a stubborn little stinker!! I guess Grandma Alice got her wish that Daddy would have a little boy that acted just like him!

We haven’t decided which one of us he looks like yet. Everyone else that looked at the pictures yesterday (we went to Aunt Lisa’s basketball game) had opinions. Aunt Lisa said he has Daddy's eyes. Grandma Cindy thought he looked like Daddy in a few and Grandpa Paul’s side of the family in others. Everyone else agreed. I guess we’ll just have to wait on the little man to get here to find out!! We can’t wait!!!

We had our ultrasound appointment today to check the placenta’s location. We had the same ultrasound tech as we did at the last appointment, so she remembered the situation and Xander (a very active little boy). She went through all the normal checks and took more measurements. Xander is still measuring big…very big!! His femur dated him at over 29wks (tomorrow is just 27wks!), his abdomen was right on schedule at 27wks, and his head measured in at a whooping 30wks!! She also said his estimated weight at this time is 2lbs 13oz!! We figure that he’s going to look like a 3mo old baby by the time he arrives (predicted due date is March 18--almost a St. Patty's Day baby)!!

What we could see this time was that he’s got Daddy’s muscle tone in his legs but that he’s going to have long legs like Mommy. He’s also going to have feet like Mommy and Grandpa Paul…big with long toes. Looks like Daddy might be right that he’ll be the right size to be a basketball player! Now we’re wondering if those adorable little booties Grandma Alice and Grandpa Dave got him are even going to fit for a day! : )

We also found out that he’s lying in a slightly different position now. His head is where it should be (resting on my cervix) with his body on my left side and his legs diagonal across my belly, feet on my right side. I guess what we thought were punches were really kicks! Since the placenta has moved out of the way of my cervix (YAY!), he isn’t able to lay on it anymore (bye-bye cushy pillow and bed). The lower edge of it is right along the back of his head. It looks like there’s definitely no need to worry about a c-section now (although we know his position can change in the next 13wks and knowing him, it DEFINITELY will—about 300 times!).

By the time the appointment was about half over, he was ready to stop being pushed on. He really started moving around and kicking. At one point, she even commented that she could feel him kicking her and that she’d hurry up. Due to how low he’s laying (she said she’d heard that babies that lay low have a calm temperament after birth…cross your fingers on that one!) and how much he was squirming around, she was having a hard time getting a good shot of his head and waited until last to take the necessary measurements and a look at his face. When she finally did stop on an image to take measurements, his head would be gone by the time she refreshed the screen. Getting a few glimpses of his face (he was being kinda shy) made us really want to see him!! So we scheduled a 3D ultrasound for next week when we got home!! Xander’s pre-Christmas pictures are in the Baby Xander album now and next week his post-Christmas pictures will be there. Hope you enjoy!

We’ve had a busy week! Last Friday (12/10) we went to USA Baby and picked up all of the nursery furniture. The dresser (fully assembled) and crib (in many pieces) are still in the boxes in the dinning room. The chair is sitting in living room but we realized the rocker rails weren’t in the box. Although it’s all here, we’ve got a long way to go until his room will be ready! Saturday (12/11) we had our Prenatal Express class at IU Hospital. After learning and becoming even more afraid of the labor and delivery process, I’m trying to figure out someway to let Chad take care of that part! We learned how to breathe to help with the contractions and Chad got to feel how much weight I’ll be lugging around by March. When it was over, we headed back to Jay Co. for Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa Minch’s. I think Xander got almost all of the Gund stuffed animals ever made, an IU outfit and socks, his first shoes (IU Nikes, of course), more clothes, burp cloths, a couple blankets, and a Fish Bowl toy. He’s spoiled rotten already and he isn’t even here yet!!

Today we had another doctor’s appointment. I had a big bowl of Brown Sugar Frosted Mini Wheats before we headed over to the brand-spankin’ new Clarian West Hospital (Dr. Lee just started seeing patients in her new office on Tuesday). They weighed me first thing and said I only put on 1lb since the last appointment 5wks ago! I don’t know how that’s possible after 3 Thanksgiving and 1 Christmas dinners!! My doctor wasn’t too thrilled and grilled us on whether or not I was eating 3 meals a day. We finally decided that their scale must be off after the move.

Unfortunately, we forgot that they were going to do the gestational diabetes test today. After double checking that I could still do it after my big bowl of sugar, I got the pleasure of drinking the orange pop tasting sludge. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be since I don’t like orange pop! While we were waiting around for an hour to do the blood test, we got to take a tour of the labor and delivery floor. It’s quite impressive!! The rooms are huge and they have Jacuzzi tubs and chairs that transform into beds for the dads. Babies stay in the room at all times, except for if you request a few hours to sleep or they run the routine tests and take pictures. An FYI for anyone that visits, they have a huge waiting room with a plasma TV so you won't have to miss any basketball!

When we finished the tour, we settled back into an exam room. Xander must really like the new office because he was being Wild Man again! We were getting a big laugh out of watching my belly doing the wave! After a stick for a few tubes of blood, we scheduled another ultrasound to monitor the placenta (keep you fingers crossed that it has moved up and away from my cervix). We were shocked to get an appointment so quickly (Tuesday, 12/21)! Hopefully we’ll have some Christmas pictures to post of our aspiring basketball/football player next week!

I was in a meeting most of he day and noticed that Xander seemed to be awake more today than he normally is (I think he has his days and nights mixed up right now). When I got back to my desk, he was still kicking and punching like crazy! I looked down at my belly as he was doing his thing and saw, for the first time, my belly actually move due to a punch!! When he's kicking or punching that hard and Chad feels it, he always asks if it hurts (no) but neither of us have actually looked to see if he's moved the walls. Well, now we know he does!!
