Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

February 2005

  • Fri, Feb 25, 2005 10:16 AM

I went back in today for a urine test to recheck the protein that was showing up on Wednesday. Today it was fine. My weight hadn't changed and my blood pressure actually went down. Dr. Lee was just beginning to worry with the swelling, blood pressure increases, and then the urine protein that preeclampsia may be starting to rear its ugly head. Thank goodness that doesn't appear to be the case!!

Since I'm so far behind on updates, I'll combine a lot of them. Doctor's visits first.

At my Feb. 9 appointment, nothing spectacular happened, again (woo hoo!). She did the normal stuff, including checking Xander's position and commented that his head was low, VERY low. Then she informed us of what she'd be doing at the next appt: going over our birth plan, performing the Group B Strep test, and checking to see if I'm effaced and/or dilated. I had been battling a cold since the Saturday before the appt so she wanted me to stay home the rest of the week and rest, drink a TON of fluids, and take in a lot of vitamin C.

The next time we went in wasn't for a scheduled appt. As you probably already saw in the last update, I had woke up last Friday with a red and swollen face. Chad and I checked my blood pressure early that morning and noticed that it was higher than at the last appt, but still in the normal range. We went in to have her check me out anyways and she didn't find anything else to worry about. Since then, I haven't had any problems (woo hoo again!)

Finally, getting to yesterday's appt. It seems that I lost 1lb since the last appt, although I don't know how since I've been eating nothing but cupcakes, cookies, and cheesecake lately! The first thing Dr. Lee said when she entered the room was that I had protein in my urine, which could indicate either preeclampsia or a bladder infection. The swollen face and blood pressure that is slowly creeping up would tend to go along with chance of preeclampsia (I don't think it's that), which could mean medical intervention to keep Xander and I safe. I haven't had any other signs of a bladder infection but if the protein has to mean something, I'd rather it be the b.i., which can be treated by antibiotics. So I have to go in on Friday and give another sample for them to check.

Then she listened to Xander's heart rate (which I think seems to be going down with each appt, but maybe that's normal because she hasn't been alarmed) and measured my uterus. Both were in the normal range. Then she went over our birth plan. She didn't see a problem with most of what we had requested, other than that the pediatrician and hospital's policy wouldn't allow Chad to go along with Xander if he had a medical emergency that they needed to attend to. Then she did the Group B Strep test and checked to see if I was effaced and/or dilated any. Surprisingly to us, I'm already 50-60% effaced and not dilated a bit! She also said that Xander's head is right there (which explains all the pressure I've been feeling for the last week) and that I've already got a head start during labor since he won't have far to travel down the birth canal. Who knows how much longer he'll decide to "cook" but Chad and I are getting REALLY excited now!! Since today is Day 2 of my maternity leave, I'm doing laundry like crazy and trying to finish getting our bags packed for the hospital, in case he does decide to make an early entry.

Less than one month to go!!! YEA!!!!

Today didn't start out the way we expected! I got out of bed at 4:30 this morning and looked at the mirror as I walked into the bathroom and noticed my face looked awfully red. When I got Chad up after my shower, it was red and he thought it looked swollen. When we got to work, I took my blood pressure on and it was up from last week at our doctors appointment. My weight gain was also up 4 pounds, however, this was due to my abnormally heavy Doc Marten shoes. After removing my shoes, my weight game was a little less than a pound. Regardless, Dr. Lee was a little concerned about my elevated blood pressure and recommended that we keep our appointment next Wednesday. We're still not sure what caused the swelling (let's hope it's not the start of something!) but it seemed to subside on its own. As long as my temperature doesn't spike, she's not too worried. However, she does want me to keep monitoring my blood pressure. So it started out with the potential to be an eventful day and ended up being not so eventful...Thank Goodness!!

Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to add another update about the last month's events!
