Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

August 2005

Xander is learning so much this month!! Wednesday he opened up his mouth really wide when Daddy was getting a drink of water so he held the cup up to Xander's mouth and he took 3 sips! He was so happy about our excitement by the 3rd sip that his big smile allowed it all to run out of his mouth! : ) Thursday he decided he didn't need anyone's help to sit up anymore and he started doing it on his own--at first for only 10-20sec at a time then in multi-minute time spans. By Friday evening he considered himself to be an expert sitter and was playing with his puppy. He started babbling up a storm while he was sitting there and out came, as clear as a bell, da-da-da!! (His Daddy smiled from ear to ear!) I swear, at this rate he's going to be driving a car by the end of the week!! : )

Xander is now officially pacifier free! He hasn't had one at home for at least 2wks now but he was still occasionally getting one at daycare. His teachers confirmed that he didn't have one at all today!!

Today we went to Xander's daycare for a "parent-teacher conference." They gave us a development report on 6 key areas--they said he's progressing well, is very alert, and is fine with trying new things at his own pace. As we were leaving to head back to work, Miss Erin was holding him and we were waving Bye-Bye to him. He raised his arm up (like he's been doing for a few days now), held it up like he wasn't sure what to do next with it, then he moved it up and down--giving us his first wave!!

Here are few more things little man has started doing over the last few weeks. He has started holding on to his bottle with one hand and exploring his head with the other. He must like how soft his fuzzy head feels, too! : ) He has also starting exploring our faces. He seems particularly interested in our mouths and eyes. Luckily, we've only had to remove his fingers from up our noses a few times! : ) One thing he seems to dislike is Daddy's scratchy face. He'll usually touch and pull his hand away. Even though my hair is MUCH shorter, he has been tangling his fingers in it again--I guess he wants to see how much he can pull out each time!

As you have probably already seen in the latest few pictures, he has also found his feet and recently realized that those things can also go in his mouth. Toes don't exactly sound like the most appetizing things to chew on but they must be a nice change from his fingers and ours.

And last but not least, he definitely has a new best friend now. He smiles or stares in amazement every time Sully comes near and he wants to pet him now. We've been helping him pet him for the last few weeks/months but he decided he's now ready to do it on his own. Sully, on the other hand, isn't quite as thrilled with this new development. He jumps back every time that little hand starts exploring. One thing Sully is happy about is that Xander's spit up tastes a whole lot better now that it has food mixed into it! (It's absolutely disgusting to see him licking it up!! He usually finds the opportunity to get a few licks in while we're scrambling around to find something to clean it up.)

As you can see from the pictures, Xander started eating baby food about 2wks ago. His first food was rice cereal and it didn't go over well. That more than likely had to do with offering it in the morning before his first bottle of the day. He was just a bit too hungry to deal with the weird white stuff being stuck in his mouth. We tried again the next day and he tried a few bites that time before letting us know he'd rather have a bottle. For the next few days, he'd open his mouth every time we had food in our hands, hoping he could try a bite. So we gave him sweet potatoes in between bottles by mid-week and he LOVED it!! Finally he was getting to eat something with some flavor!! : ) Everything I had read said he probably wouldn't eat more than a teaspoon at a time in the beginning. He ate that much when he wasn't interested in food!! After 2days he was requesting a jar at a time!! His latest dinnertime development is to say "mmmmm" (okay it's actually more like a grunt/growl) with each bite! One thing that hasn't changed is that dinnertime isn't playtime--he's all business. He doesn't have the patience to talk or smile or play while he's eating. At first he got kinda frustrated with Daddy because he didn't shovel it in fast enough! This week he'll finish up the orange veggies (what lovely stains they create!) and move on to the dreaded green ones. My guess is that he won't miss a beat and will sit begging for more! : )

Xander became all excited today when we got home from work/daycare and I opened the laptop (maybe it's his picture as Daddy's desktop wallpaper). So I let him type. Here's the message he wanted to share with everyone. As you can see, he liked the Enter and period keys.

Last night we had a cranky baby. Xander rolled over onto his belly twice while he was sleeping last night, woke up and realized how he was laying and was NOT happy! Being on his tummy is his LEAST favorite position to be in. Flipping him back onto his back/side and popping his pacifier in his mouth made things all better! This was the first time (at least that we've seen) that he has rolled over while sleeping. It will be interesting now to see how often we find him laying on his belly with his head at the foot of his crib! : )
