Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

January 2006

Another month, another case of bronchitis, which means another round of Zithromax and more cough syrup with codeine. His slightly higher weight (up 1/2lb since last month) means a slightly bigger does of cough syrup. Maybe it'll be enough to knock him out so he can finally get some much needed rest!! Without it, he's been coughing and crying in his sleep! : (

Before he really started feeling bad on Saturday, he got to take part in another first: eating restaurant food! He had Lone Star chicken strips (minus the breading) and cantaloupe. YUMMY! He devoured all he could get in his mouth, although we're pretty sure the floor got about as much! : )

Xander has been on the move again! Tonight while we were making dinner, we looked over to see little man "elephant walking" (crawling on his hands and feet) around his high chair! Of all the ways he's attempted to move around, that one has got to be the funniest!! : ) He has also been pulling up to standing for the last week or so and Tuesday he started cruising. Chad and I were sitting at the ends of the couch and Xander decided to cruise over from Mommy to Daddy. He's not very confident in this new form of transportation yet so he hasn't gotten too daring. For now it's only a few feet at a time and only if we're around. Maybe he really will be walking before he's 1! It's hard to believe that's only 1½mo away!!

Realizing he's officially going to be a big boy soon, he's been adding to his bag of tricks daily! He's saying a lot of new words and even knows a few animal sounds. When we ask him what a doggie says, he answers “Woo Woo and tells us that a cow says mooooo! He's even started to recognize them and moos/barks when he sees cow/dog toys, pictures, and the real thing! He seems to be starting to use his imagination lately, too. His favorite toy at daycare is a cell phone. He puts it up to his ear (or sometimes just his hand) and says "Hello/Hi," then dadadadada. He must have some really important stuff to tell his Daddy! To really show off how big he’s getting, he will rarely eat baby food anymore and absolutely LOVES to feed himself his entire meal. Much to our surprise, cottage cheese is still one of his absolute favorites and one of the only things he is still excited to have fed to him. And as if he needs to act more like his Daddy, his favorite food right now is Goldfish crackers. If we go anywhere near the bucket o crackers, he's saying MMMM, which means more/gimme some. We're also starting to phase out his bottles--his mid-morning one was the first to go and he doesn't seem to mind at all. Next week we'll drop the afternoon bottle, leaving only the first thing in the morning and last thing before bed bottles. We're wondering if he'll miss those two a little more.

He also got to meet his newest friend, Vivian Johns, yesterday. When he first saw her, he kept looking back and forth between us with the look of "Mommy, the babies aren't this small at my school!" For most of our visit he was content to play with Vivian's daddy, Colin, but towards the end he had decided that he had shared his mommy long enough--she had to go! Doesn’t that sound like a budding, jealous toddler!?!

We just wanted to congratulate our friends Stacy and Colin on the birth of their daughter, Vivian Reese. She was born 6days after her due date yesterday evening. She was 8lbs and 21.5in long.

It didn't take him long to figure out how much more stuff he could get into if he could figure out how to stand up on his own. Tonight he pulled up to standing at the couch several times! One second Chad and I were talking to each other and the next we were seeing little hands probing all over next to us and a mischievously grinning face. If he continues at this rate he'll be cruising by the end of the month and walking before he's 1! : )

Due to his recent interest in the Sully's water dish, we've been trying to figure out how to corral him to keep him out of trouble. We mentioned to one of his teachers earlier this week that we were trying to find a baby gate that would do the job. Today we found out that we don't want one that latches like the one they have there. Evidently the little Houdini has figured out how to open the gate (the top of gate has a push button release) and get into the little baby area of the room! Oh yeah--he's now the oldest child in his room! The last two little girls that are older than him are transitioning into a toddler room this week.

He's also starting to say a big word fairly regularly now: doggie. Can you tell that he and Sully are becoming pretty good friends?!

Why do they have to grow up so fast?! He's doing so many new things just in the last week! As Chad already mentioned, he's crawling! Sully is loving and hating this new development. Xander's new favorite thing to do is crawl after Sully's toys. When he reaches one, he sits down beside it and grabs it--that's when the fun begins! Sully takes it away, Xander giggles hysterically, and Sully scrambles back about 4ft. Then they do it again! We're not quite sure if Sully thinks the game is as funny as Xander does though. His other favorite thing to crawl towards is Sully's water dish. He goes into overdrive huffing and puffing (the I'm-going-really-fast sound) his way over. Then he acts like it's bath time and sticks his hand in and splashes. Daddy just stands there shaking his head while he imagines all the trouble these two will be getting into together in the days to come! : )

One morning last week I went into to wake him up and found him sitting up, smiling sweetly at me (with his head just a few inches below the top of the crib rail!). Within minutes after getting home from work, Chad had the mattress pulled out and was under his crib dropping the mattress platform down. Xander thought the activity was great fun! He was climbing all over the mattress and even laid down on it with a blankey like he was going to take a nap! Slow down big boy! I don't think Mommy's ready for you to be done with your crib yet! : )

We also got our weekly call from his teachers to update us on what he's been up to--bunches! The new year brought a lot of new babies into his room. He's been playing the role of the big boy in the class and checking on babies in the bouncy seats for the teachers. He pulls up on the seat, gently lays his hand on them to see if they're okay, then he plays with the toys dangling in front of them! (Sounds like he'll make a good big brother some day!) When he's done with his baby rounds and decides to play with a toy, his teachers tell him the name of it and he tries his hardest to repeat it. His vocabulary seems to be growing everyday! And so are his social skills! Whenever a parent leaves the room, he tells them bye-bye until they say it back to him!

He's also got a new snack time trick that he's sooooo proud of. When he's done eating, he stands up at the toddler table and pushes his chair back. (Maybe it's time to get him a little table and chairs at home!) He's also trying to steal the slow eaters' snacks again. When he's told not to do that, he babbles back at them emphatically! (Such lip! Who would he get that from?!) And that's not the only time his attitude has come out. When his girlfriend Ava's mom came to take her home one day, he "yelled" at her when she picked Ava up! (Goof ball!) He's also eating off the big kid menu for lunch and loves to feed himself chunks of fruit. It takes him a few attempts to get used to the texture of all the new foods but he likes it so much better than baby food.

And these are just the new things he's been doing in the last week! He must have thought he needed to master some new skills before he turned 10mo old!

Well....It is official. Xander is now crawling (forward). He crawled several times tonight. Of course, he crawls to get the things he wants, which just happen to be Sully's toys. Sully seems to enjoy this new found interest though and carries the toys over to Xander and then runs away to entice him to crawl after him.

    Crawling....uuuuuugh....we are in trouble now.....in a good way!! =)

We hope everyone had a great holiday season!! Xander definitely enjoyed all his time off with his Mommy and Daddy, family, and friends to celebrate his first Christmas, although he slept through his first New Years celebration. So much has happened with little man since the last update that I apologize in advance for the length! :)

Everyone's vacation started a little early and a little sickly. Xander caught a stomach bug on Wednesday (12/14) and stayed home from day care with Daddy. He seemed to be fine by the end of the day so we sent him on to day care on Thursday, only to have him sent home by mid-day. By Friday he was fine but he'd passed the bug (referred to as the Black Death!) on to Mommy and Daddy, which made for a not-so-fun Christmas for us up at Grandma Alice and Grandpa Dave's house. Xander, on the other hand, loved playing with family and all of the presents he received (way too many!) but liked the wrapping paper the most! : ) Since we were all feeling fine by Sunday evening, we headed up to Ft. Wayne with Grandma Cindy and Grandpa Paul where Xander watched his first live basketball game. (He seemed to do more people watching than watching Dane Fife coach IPFW to a 2pt loss to Notre Dame!) But by the end of the night he sounded terribly congested. Monday morning we woke up to the sound of him struggling to take a breath so we rushed him to the Jay County ER. He was diagnosed with croop, given a steroid shot to reduce the inflammation in his trachea so he could breath easier, had a breathing treatment, and was put on a decongestant. When he got the shot he yelled OW! Poor little guy! If the day hadn’t been rough enough, he also cut his second tooth that day! But he wasn’t done yet! On Wednesday evening he spiked another fever, which we thought was kind of odd since he hadn’t had a fever since Monday morning. When we took him in for his 9mo check up, we found out the reason for that fever—he had bronchitis! Some Zithromax and cough medicine cleared it right up and he’s feeling fine again! We were hoping those were all the illnesses we were going to have to deal with for awhile but a call from Aunt Jama saying that Caleb has chicken pox means he might be getting sick for the fourth time in a month’s time!

Despite being sick during most of his vacation, he still learned a lot of new tricks. He’s now able to get up on his hands and knees and crawl backwards a little bit. Once he crawls over to one of his new toys, the laundry basket, the couch or coffee table, he’s figured out how to sit down in front of it and then pull up on it to his knees so he can play (thank goodness we got the tree down yesterday!). Overall, these new skills have made him a little less frustrated, although he still gets pretty mad about not being able to go forward as easily as he’d like and not being able to reach all the really high stuff yet. Another thing he’s started doing regularly is dancing (rocking back and forth) to music on the radio, TV, at church, or being poorly sung by Mommy or Daddy. If he’s upright or in his car seat, it looks like he’s head banging! He cracks us up!
