Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

November 2006

Finally, I'm back on to add an update! Here's the not so condensed version of Emilie’s birth.

Saturday morning, Oct. 28, I woke up at 1:58am with the realization that the contraction I was currently having was kind of painful (I'd been having painless BHs for the last few months). That was new!! So I smacked Chad a few times until he finally stirred and told him. His response was to wake him up when they're 10min apart for an hour and he went back to sleep. Thanks! I started timing them and they met that criteria so I had him page Dr. Lee. Her instructions were to take a shower, call her back when they were every 5-6min for an hour, and she'd notify the hospital that we were on our way. That took no time at all! As soon as I got up and moving, they picked up in frequency and were actually less painful. Time to put our plan in action--Chad called Amy DeHaven to have her come over and keep an eye on Xander for a few hours and I called my parents (my mom volunteered to watch Xander while we were in the hospital). As soon as Amy got here, we headed out around 4:30am.

We sat in triage for a half hour after my cervix was checked (2.5-3cm dilated and 50-75% effaced) while my contractions and Emilie's heart rate were monitored. My contractions had slowed down tremendously (10-16min apart) so Dr. Lee recommended walking around for an hour. They picked back up again until I went back to triage for another half hour of monitoring while they slowed down again. The nurse figured I'd be sent home but she checked my cervix again anyway and to everyone's surprise, I'd progressed to 100% effaced and 4-5cm dilated! Dr. Lee ordered me to be admitted and to get my epidural ASAP just in case I continued to progress that quickly. It was now about 7am.

Unfortunately, things slowed down. I made it to 6-7cm dilated by 9am without having my water break so Dr. Lee went ahead and ruptured it. Then I didn't progress anymore between 9-10am. The nurse figured I'd be pushing by 10am so I guess they were once again wrong. Dr. Lee ordered a pitocin drip to speed things along while I took a much needed nap for the next hour. Shockingly again, when I was checked at 11am, I had completely dilated! After maybe 6-8 pushes, they made me stop pushing so they could get everything ready--no one expected her to be crowning so quickly. At 11:30am, Emilie Kathryn entered the world!! The first thing Chad and I noticed was that she was tiny! Another big shock!!

She was taken over to the warmer with Daddy following immediately behind her with cameras in hand as her lungs were suctioned for what seemed like forever! There was a lot of fluid in her lungs but she was okay. When the nurse FINALLY finished, they wheeled the scale in--7lbs 3oz!! WOW!! When I got to hold her again, we tried nursing. She didn't show much interest so she got her first bath. That's the way nursing went for the first 24hrs so I got pretty worried. We were reassured by her pediatrician the next morning that this was normal and that she'd figure it out by the start of her second 24hrs, which she did.

The first afternoon/evening, she was visited by Grandma/pa Minch, Grandma/pa Weitzel, Uncle Chad and Aunt Michelle, Amy DeHaven, Aunt Jenny, Uncle Ryan & Joske, and big brother Xander. Xander had a ball entertaining everyone so he didn't pay much attention to Emilie. When he did, he was very sweet and didn't need to be told to be gentle very often. We all had fun comparing Joske and Emilie (a 9day age and 3oz/0.75in birth stats difference). On Day2, Aunt Melinda and Cousin Brayden visited after Miss Emilie's first exam. She checked out completely healthy, except for an atypical cyst under her tongue. Dr. McIntire told us these were the type of thing you see once in a career and hers was the second one he'd see this year. He recommended seeing an oral surgeon to have it removed but warned us that it would probably be difficult to locate one that would operate when she was this young. After an uneventful remainder of our stay, we headed home Monday afternoon. We were soooooooo excited to get home and see Xander! I don't think he missed us too much because he was having such a ball with Momaw and Pawpaw (THANK YOU THANK YOU for taking care of him!!). And so began the start of our 2 child family!! We’re so blessed and so in love with our 2 babies!
