Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

July 2006

Since I'm soooooo far behind on updates, I'll try to add a little at a time. My apologies to everyone that has been waiting patiently for some news to appear! Life has been rather hectic lately but I’ll discuss that later!

In this installment, I'll try to recap the BIG ultrasound as best as my placenta brain will allow me to. : ) After literally waddling down to the check-in and waiting area outside the radiology department in the hospital, we/I had an agonizing wait to get into the ultrasound exam room (both due to the excitement and desperately needing to use the restroom again). I hopped up on the table and let her know that we needed to make the first part go as quickly as possible before we had a problem. She checked my cervix (no worries there), confirmed again that the placenta was attached on the front side of my uterus (diagonally from the top right down towards my left hip) and that I had an EXCESSIVELY full bladder, and let me “run to the restroom. : )

Next she checked all the organs—all there and looking good. She spent the most time checking her heart and heart rate, which naturally made me nervous. Finally she said the problem was that our little one kept squirming around and she was having a hard time getting a good measurement of the heart rate. Then she asked if we wanted to know Baby’s sex—OF COURSE!!! She moved the probe down to Baby’s bottom side and couldn’t get a good look. She did a lot of probe shaking and literally jiggling my belly but still couldn’t tell. To conserve time, she went ahead and completed the rest of the measurements. Baby was 19wks 5days at the time and most measurements were coming in at either 20wks 1day or 19wks 1day—proving that the estimated due date seemed to be right on target. [Gigantic sigh] Maybe this one won’t be as big as Xander at birth!! : ) Then she finished up the head measurements and I think my jaw dropped! She measured the head in at 22wks 1day! That’s a measurement no mom anticipating a vaginal child birth wants to hear!! : )

Finally, she checked on Baby’s sex again. This time she had no troubles getting a good shot. Daddy could immediately see that Xander was going to be the big brother of a little SISTER! I think I knew as well what I was looking at but couldn’t believe it so I had her actually say it—You’re having a GIRL! Neither of us had really considered the possibility that Baby was a girl. We were close to coming up with a boy name (just debating the middle name) but hadn’t even discussed girl names—we never did anything other than veto EVERY proposal!

We headed out to the car and started making phone calls. All the grandparents, aunts and uncles, and friends (that couldn’t wait to read the news on the site) were soooooo excited! The Minch side was happy to finally start thinking pink and the Weitzel side was glad to hear Joske wasn’t going to be completely ganged up on by all male cousins. Our friends were all happy to hear that our house would finally be gaining some gender balance! : ) As I dropped Chad off at work, I think he was still in shock about the news (in a good way, of course!). He was greeted by his co-workers sending him photos of little girls’ shoes collections and hearing about how he was already wrapped around her unborn, little finger! How true, how true! : )

Okay, so this wasn't a little bit update! I guess I should have said one topic at a time!
