Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

January 2007

I'm so far behind that I don't know where to begin! I'll update everyone on as much as I can while they're napping.

I started back to work full time on January 2 (boo hoo!), although Daddy spent the first work day of the new year at home. We decided to keep Emilie out of daycare until her follow-up appointment on Wednesday. So after one very long day back at work after 3mo, I stayed home with her to take her to her appointment. We were instructed to continue the breathing treatments until we felt she didn't need them anymore. By the end of the week, her cough sounded remarkably better so we cut her albuterol treatments down from 4 times a day and her Pulmicort from twice a day down to albuterol 3 times a day and Pulmicort once a day. She continued this regimen for a week and still sounded good, so we dropped the Pulmicort altogether and went down to 2 albuterols each day. Last week was her last week of treatments; she's been done now for a week. We were warned that if she caught a chest cold or was around smokers or a wood burning stove that her cough would probably flare up again and we'd have to resume treatments. Unfortunately Daddy, Xander, and Emilie have been battling head colds all week. Luckily she's managed to keep the cold out of her chest and avoid more treatments. Although Donna (their sitter) has gotten to see the result of too much sinus drainage in her tummy--large amounts of vomit!

She seems to be doing really well at Donna’s. I stopped in Wednesday after her doctor’s appointment to give her a bottle before going to pick up Chad. As soon as I got her out of her car seat, all the kids surrounded us and wanted to touch her. As we finally managed to make it over to the couch to sit down, Jasmine (Xander’s age) was already sitting on the middle cushion. Xander pushed his way in between us and sat down beside me. Evidently he took it to heart when Daddy told him to protect his baby sister because when Abby (3-4yrs old) tried to touch her chest, Xander yelled No touch! until she backed away. : )

Her first day there started out pretty eventful, too. Right after we walked out the door (I managed to hold me tears in until getting in the car), she had a bowel movement—a blowout all over her clothes! Since then, she’s been the main attraction for all the kids. They all talk to her, follow her around, love to bring her toys (that’s our trick to get Xander occupied so we can leave in the morning), and are very interested in where her pacifier is at all times. It’s very sweet! : ) Last week we found out that she’s pretty quiet while she’s there. Donna said she was shocked when she heard her make a noise (other than crying) that afternoon. We just assumed she talked everyone’s ear off there like she does at home. (Although it did make us feel good to know that she only wanted to talk to us!) This week she finally got over her shyness and started talking to everyone. She definitely seems to be Xander’s opposite!

One thing that hasn’t changed much is her diet. She’s still on Enfamil Gentlease to help control her gas since she hates gas drops so much and she still needs Karo syrup added to her bottles to help with bowel movements. Daddy jokes that she’s “addicted” to the sugar because her formula intake varies so much (anywhere from 4-6oz and 3-5hrs between bottles) from feeding to feeding. The only thing that stays constant is that she sucks down the ones with Karo in them. So we’ve been giving her a little less syrup but have been putting it in all of her bottles lately. That seems to have helped. Are we going to have a picky eater on our hands? : )

She seems to make strides in her development in surges. She’ll go about a week without doing anything new and then she starts doing a lot all at once. Sleeping through the night was never something she showed much interest in until all at once right after her hospital stay. Now she sleeps for about 5-6hrs straight in her crib (she was sleeping in a cradle in our room) before getting cranky at about 3-4am. Sleep has become even more precious with two kids so we take the easy way out and put her in bed with us until we get up for work at about 5am. She also sits on our lap holding her head as she watches Xander and Sully playing. Evidently she’s been telling them how silly they are because she talks to them as she watches most of the time now. Reading books, playing with toys held in front of her, talking to lights, and getting more excited than we’ve ever seen her as she watches her crib mobile are her favorite activities these days. She also moved into her big girl bath tub the second week of January and LOVES it! Except for last Saturday when our water heater stopped working as we ran her bath water. (That was QUITE an ordeal that resulted in several hours of missed work and getting our water heater replaced.) Earlier this month she nearly rolled over (got caught on her arm and couldn’t make it over) but hasn’t showed any interest in trying it again. She still HATES tummy time so it’ll probably be awhile until she builds up the strength to push up on her arms.

Today we went to get her 3mo pictures taken at Target. We should have access to them online next week so we’ll post them for everyone to ooh and aah over the pretty dress Daddy picked out for her to wear. You’ll also get to see how much she seems to be filling out lately—finally! : )

Time for Xander to get up so I’ll update on him next time. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the pictures uploaded of his first hair cut (the card went bad and the picture files must be corrupted because the website can’t display any except for those 3).
