Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

February 2007

Yesterday Emilie had a scheduled 4mo well baby doctor's appointment but that wasn't the only reason we ending up going. Xander and Mommy have had a chest cold for the last 1-2wks. It seems that Emilie also caught it this week. Wednesday she vomited on two outfits at daycare and soaked herself and Mommy that evening. We noticed it was streaked with mucus so she has obviously caught our cold. Thursday wasn't much better for her. She would only take 2-3oz of formula at a time (5-6oz is normal for her) and was running a low grade fever by evening so Daddy stayed home with her and Xander on Friday.

Her appointment started out well with weight (up to the 74th %--good job!), length (99th %--holy cow! We're gonna have 2 giants!!), and head circumference (still on the small side) checks. Then she got a break while Xander was examined. Dr. Duck said it was only a viral infection right now but wrote us a script for an antibiotic in case he took a turn for the worse over the weekend (which he has--Daddy is filling it as I type). The physical exam wasn't bad--no crying this time as he checked her hip joints. And she seemed very interested as we discussed her eating habits. She still requires Karo syrup in her bottles to help with BMs. When we try to cut back, constipation rears its ugly head again. He said it's okay for her to be on it long term. It just means she's going to require A LOT of fluids and fiber throughout her life and that she'll get to skip the bland cereals (they will only make her constipation worse) and start with veggies next month.

Then things got even worse for poor Miss Emilie. She got another 4 shots and the oral immunization. Our poor baby screamed like we had never heard before! : ( As we walked out, the nurses all had to try to comfort her!! We were told to expect her to be achy, cranky, and run a low grade fever. She had them all plus diarrhea, a refusal to eat, extreme fatigue, and a very swollen thigh. Poor baby!! : ( Thank goodness that didn't last long! This morning she woke up at 5am screaming bloody murder because she was starving! YEA!!! She's been all smiles ever since! Thank goodness we've got another 2mo before she has to have more!!

Happy snow storm everyone! We hope the snow hasn't caused too much trouble for anyone! We all stayed home yesterday and watched the snow come down. Xander had fun helping Mommy bake and ice sugar cookies. (Okay, eat is a more accurate description!) We also made Valentines for all their friends at Donna's house. Xander's favorite part was playing with the stickers, which we're still finding stuck in the carpet everywhere! Throughout the day, the snow continued to steadily fall with some sleet mixed in at some point. By the time we went to bed, the basement windows were completely covered by snow!

This morning Chad woke up to find that the heater had gone out once again. It was down 7F already. He decided to dig out our driveway hoping we could all leave and make it to warmer places for the day. He went outside at 5am and finally finished around 7:30am! He figured there was at least 12in of new snow to clear!!

Around 8:30am we dropped the kids off at the babysitter only to find out that Hendricks County was under a Snow Emergency and we weren't supposed to be on the roads. Ooops! Surprisingly, the roads weren't too bad and it only took us an extra 20min to get to work. When Chad called the repair business to get someone out to fix the heater, he was informed that all the trucks stuck! As soon as they were pulled out and finished their morning stops, they'd be out to our house. We made it back home to find that the temperature was down to 58F (we can only imagine how cold that was in Xander's room)! We all bundled up in an extra sweatshirt, slippers, and blankets until the repairman came. Hopefully it's fixed this time--for good!

Hopefully this doesn't jinx things but Emilie has completely slept through the night the last two nights!!! We were both stunned when the alarm went off and we realized neither one of us got up to get her at her normal 3am fussy time Wednesday/Thursday morning. Xander must be getting some new molars in because he woke up crying that first night and Chad and I both had to get up to calm him down. So last night was the first time I haven't got up in the middle of the night since...um...March 2006 (nightly potty breaks started around then)! It was heavenly!! : )

    Keep it up big girl!!!!

A quick note about the kiddies' Riley appointments.

Xander's appointment was at 9am on a Monday morning for a consultation with Dr. Havlick to see if he thought Xander needed to have his tongue clipped. We got there a little early, expecting to have some paperwork to fill out. Xander and I walked the hallways to keep him busy while we waited. Since he was at Dr. Havlick's craniofacial office, we got to see a lot of infants and kids with cleft palates. It really made us thankful that he was in for such a minor thing, especially while watching many babies being fed through tubes with syringes!

Time quickly passed as Xander pushed the button on the water fountain (several times), ate a box of raisins, looked at the flags/banners hanging from the ceiling, and ran back to tell Daddy all about it. When his name was finally called, we'd been waiting for 2hrs! His first stop was to get weighed (with nothing on but a fresh diaper--a new experience for him that he was NOT fond of) and measured. One nurse recorded his measurements while another tried without success to distract him with bubbles. Luckily that didn't take long and we were taken back to an exam room to wait and get him dressed and calmed down. After about 5min, Dr. Havlick and two young doctors came in. He had Xander sit on my lap facing me and lay down on my legs so he could look in his mouth. If he wouldn't have been screaming, Dr. Havlick wouldn't have gotten a look inside! He quickly stated that he tongue was attached and needed to be released. He told us the surgery would only take a few minutes and that Xander would have to be given a general anesthetic. As soon as the mask is removed, he'll wake right up. He'll have to stay for a few hours to make sure he's okay, and then he'll be sent home. Until then, we're waiting on our new insurance to approve the surgery (thanks Lilly!) and we'll get it scheduled.

That's where we stand with Xander right now. As for Emilie's appointment, we rescheduled it. Since he was already 2hrs behind at 9am (not too bad considering he has 3 offices!), we couldn't imagine how far behind he'd be at 4:20pm!! The first available morning appointment was on March 30 so they're putting on the cancellation list to try to move her up and see her sooner. We'll let everyone know more when we finally have the surgery scheduled!
