Xander, Emilie and Baby #3

March 2007

Emilie finally had her appointment today with Dr. Havlick at Riley to have her cyst site examined! And it went REALLY well!! Xander is seeing the same doctor for his surgery. When we went for his appointment, we waited for a couple of hours after his appointment time to finally see the good doc. Today we were called in 30min before Emilie's appointment time! Once she got in the office, she charmed the nurse completely (she asked if she could keep her all day to cuddle with) as she was measured (26in--no change) and weighed (16lbs 4oz!). The nurse was quick to point out that she was fully clothed with a somewhat full diaper so she was guessing more like 15.5lbs. (If you'd see this girl eat, you wouldn't be surprised about her packing on so much weight so quickly! We think she likes to eat more than Xander does!!)

When Dr. Havlick came back he examined under her tongue. Emilie was quick to voice her displeasure at having his finger feeling under tongue, pushing to feel for hard places (none), and checking her neck (fine). He quickly told us that what she had was a ranula—a cyst that forms when a salivary duct becomes blocked (I have one on the inside of my bottom lip—called a mucocele at that location, had it removed, and another immediately replaced it). They generally require no treatment because they often rupture spontaneously (as hers did). If she would happen to have another one, he said he’d open it up and allow it to drain, and sew the flaps of skin down. He reassured us that the chance of reoccurrence is on the lower side--about 40%--and that some kids never have another one. She hasn’t had another one reappear since hers ruptured at between 2-4wks old so he thinks her chances are good that she may never have a reoccurrence. Woo hoo

Chad and I just got back from Urology of Indiana. They had an opening at 10am this morning so I jumped at the chance to get in sooner. What Dr. Batler said was that my stone is near my bladder so I was a better candidate for laser destruction of the stone. He said I'd be put under, he'd go in and scope my bladder and up my ureter to find the stone, go in with a laser and break it up, retrieve the pieces, and put in a stent. He said there's a slim chance that they wouldn't be able to do the procedure and that he might have to put a drain line into my kidney and attach a bag! AAHHH! He reassured me the chance of that is very small but he wanted me to be aware that it could happen. On Monday, assuming everything is healing okay, he’ll remove the stent. He also said the stent will probably be uncomfortable so it won’t be a fun weekend. It can’t be any worse than this is!!

This is all taking place at the Surgery Center of Carmel (associated with St. Vincent's) tomorrow. I go in for another "picture" of my abdomen (a KUB) to locate the stone at 2:30pm and the procedure will take place at 3pm. The bad part is that I can't eat or drink after midnight tonight!!! And they suggested that I not take any pain medication tomorrow either! So I feel so sorry for Chad tomorrow!! I'm going to be MISERABLE to be around!! To make matters even better, he's starting to have flu symptoms!! Our family is a picture of perfect health right now! : )

As has been the norm lately for kids’ birthday parties, we had to postpone poor Xander's party on Saturday. He woke up Friday morning running a low grade fever (99.5F) and it was completely obvious that he didn't feel well. He was so upset that he wouldn't even take his jammies off (as you may have already seen in the March photo album)! After a dose of yummy Motrin, reading his new book on Mommy's lap, and 20min later, he was jolly Xander again--ready for breakfast and to play some soccer. (Daddy took him shopping to pick out a soccer ball for his birthday and he's talked about nothing else since they went!) We dropped him and Em off at Donna's and headed into work for the day.

We got a call from her later saying that she could tell when the Motrin was wearing off because he visually started to wind down and his fever was returning. Around noon we made the tough decision to postpone his party. He was okay for a few hours if he was on Motrin but we didn't think he'd really feel like partying. The next report we got said that he didn't want to play or eat lunch (you KNOW he's sick if he refuses food!). All he wanted to do was sleep, which he did for the next 4 HOURS!! She actually had to wake him up and even then he wouldn't get up from his sleeping bag. He was running a 100F by then so I made yet another call into Dr. Duck's office that week. (Emilie was running a 101.5F on Tuesday afternoon and had a sinus infection and the start of an ear infection. She's taking fluorescent pink amoxicillin that stains everything in the vicinity of where she gets to take the sticky stuff. After only 24hrs, she started to smile again but it took until Sunday before she started to take her regular amount of formula and sleep again—she started waking up at 3am DEMANDING a bottle because she was taking so little throughout the day.) They said it sounded like he was battling a virus and to let him sleep as much as he wants, push fluids, and to call back if things change.

Well of course they did. Saturday morning he woke up with a 102.5F fever and more grouchiness. Mom and Xander packed up and headed into Dr. Duck's office while Emilie and Dad waited on Momaw Alice and Popaw Dave to arrive. She had already made him a cool football cake for the party so they decided to bring it to him even if the guests weren't coming. As soon as we got in the car, he informed me that the car was a mess--EEWWW! (He's right about that!) We found out he has an ear infection and his doc thinks the cough and runny nose may be allergies. He's supposed to take Claritin for a few weeks. If it clears them up, keep him on it until summer. If not, he can stop taking it and we'll be back in to figure out why he's still coughing and snotty.

So that's what's been going on with the kids last week. Now for even more drama on top of all of that! Friday night I was watching basketball when pain started on my front, left side and progressed to a HORRIBLE sharp pain in my back. After a few hours of rocking and walking, it went away. Saturday it didn't bother me at all, although the head and chest cold I have knocked me out. But on Sunday morning around 3am, the pain was back--only in the front this time--but even worse than on Friday! About an hour after taking a leftover vicodin from Emilie's birth that wasn't helping in the slightest, I finally woke Chad up and told him we had to make it stop. So we packed the kids up and headed to the ER. An IV, some pain meds, and a CT scan later, I found out I have a 9mm kidney stone and a urinary tract infection!!! I was told that it's too large to pass on its own and that I'll need a stint and/or it broken up to pass it. The ER doc was amazed that I wasn't vomiting due to all the pain (which I guess is the norm) and that the meds they gave me were managing it, so he sent me home to deal with it on an out-patient basis.

I was prescribed 800mg of ibuprofen and percocet for the pain and leviquin for the UTI. I quickly found out I'm allergic to percocet after I started to itch all over due to the rash covering my entire upper body and the nausea I was experiencing. So now I'm taking Vicodin ES (750mg) instead. The ibuprofen is no fun either--it makes my face flushed and causes more nausea. The ER doc figured I could get in to see an urologist by Tuesday to get this taken care of--wrong! No office has any openings until Friday!! So I guess I'm supposed to just sit around here feeling loopy as I wait on it to start moving again or for Friday to roll around--which ever happens first. AAHHH!!

We'll be sure to keep everyone updated about what's going on. We had originally planned on rescheduling Xander's party for Saturday, March 31 but Chad wants to wait until we see how this plays out. Keep that date open though! I know I want this to all be over with WELL before that!! : )
